Lyris Technologies: More Consumers Using Web Based Email
Trend Signals Growing Need For Online Marketers to Monitor Email Legibility
BERKELEY, Calif.—Nov. 17, 2005—Lyris® Technologies, subsidiary of J.L. Halsey (OTCBB:JLHY - News) and leading provider of email marketing solutions, today released poll results indicating increased use of web-based email programs among consumers. The company found that 64 percent of the 141 consumers surveyed use a web-based email account like Hotmail or Yahoo to check email, while only 37 percent use a software program such as Outlook or Eudora--down from previous years.
"Web based email clients hold special challenges for marketers doing HTML messaging," said Lyris Vice President Robb Wilson. "The HTML code of emails has to be compatible with that of Email Service Providers like Gmail and Yahoo, or it won't display properly in those environments. This plurality of web-based email clients in use by consumers today means that even well established, big name companies frequently send out broken, and badly rendering email messages without realizing it."
"Research shows that consumers also tend to interpret broken and badly rendering messages as scams," Wilson added, "so brand-conscious companies need to make sure that their legitimate campaigns are fully legible across multiple clients. This isn't just good brand stewardship, it drives response as well."
Recent years have seen a increasing number of email clients in use by consumers. Longtime ISPs such as Earthlink and AOL now offer web-based versions of their popular email programs in addition to software versions, giving marketers an ever-growing number of applications in which to validate messages. The multiplicity of clients has even fostered technology that allows marketers see at-a-glance how their email messages will appear a wide range of programs. Lyris' EmailAdvisor service, for instance, shows how an email message will look in more than 35 different programs, including web-based clients such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, Lycos, AOL and Earthlink.
Lyris' poll results were based on responses from 141 Internet savvy consumers who check email more than once per day, and is part of its ongoing survey series on consumer email preferences and habits.
